Poster Sizes Explained: A4 to A0 – Which Size Do You Need?

Choosing a poster size is not just about how much space you have – it is about how far away people will be when they see it. Here is a quick guide to the standard A-series sizes and what each one is best for.

Standard poster sizes

Each size is exactly double the one before it – two A4 sheets make an A3, two A3 sheets make an A2, and so on.

Which size should I choose?

A4 and A3: close-up reading

Ideal for notice boards, menus, price lists, opening hours and window posters that people read from a metre or two away.

A2: the event poster

A popular size for events, offers and in-store promotions. Large enough to catch attention across a room, small enough to fit most windows and boards.

A1 and A0: maximum impact

Use these for exhibitions, large shop windows, receptions and anywhere people see the poster from a distance. A1 is also the standard size for many outdoor A-board and pavement sign frames.

Indoor or outdoor?

If your poster will be outside or in a sunny window, choose an outdoor poster made from tougher, weather-resistant material. For shops, offices and events, a standard indoor poster on quality paper is perfect.

Design tips for posters

• Keep your headline short – it should be readable in two seconds.
• Use one strong image rather than lots of small ones.
• Make the call to action clear: a date, phone number, website or QR code.
• Leave space around text so it does not feel crowded.
